Travel Crete Private Tours – city of Chania

Chania (Hanía) on the north coast in western Crete has to be one of Greece’s most beautiful towns.

The city of Chania, the capital of the prefecture of Chania, the western most regional unit of Crete, is the most popular holiday destination in Crete and one of the most beautiful destinations in Greece.

The old town of Chania is considered as one of the most beautiful spots on Crete, with its jewel – the charming old Venetian harbour of Chania, ideal place for a morning coffee, sightseeing, romantic walks in the evening, shopping and nightlife.

Extension of the city, stretching to its west, lies the large coastal resort area of Kato Stalos – Agia Marina – Platanias where the frantic fun throughout the day and night, takes place in the beach-bars & clubs of the area.

Apart from the beautiful old town and the cosmopolitan areas of the north coast near the city of Chania, the prefecture of Chania is ideal for day trips where you’ll visit exotic beaches and will see remarkably natural landscapes.

You will also travel to different periods of the island’s rich history, on the occasion of the monuments that you will encounter.

Visit in Chania (Hania)

The Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is in one of the national parks of Greece, and the only one situated on Crete. Set in the White Mountains of western Crete, the gorge is 16 km (10 mi) long, starting from Omalos (Xyloskalo) at an altitude of 1.250 m (4.100 ft.) and dropping all the way down to sea level, at the village of Agia Roumeli. It is a hike that can take anything from between four and six hours and it is best to start early in the morning to avoid too much of the midday heat, as well as the crowds.

The first mile is a steep drop of 1.000 m (3.300 ft.) that follows a tricky trail called the Wooden Stairs – this is the hardest part of the trek after which the slope is gentler. The path follows the river bed, so the park is only open from late spring when the river is dry. The vegetation is at its best in spring, when there is a mass of wildflowers, and the scent of mountain thyme and oregano fills the air. This is one of the last areas still inhabited by the rare, horned wild mountain goat known as Kri-Kri, and hikers occasionally report a sighting.

Half-way through the gorge lies the deserted village of Samaria, now a resting place for tired walkers, and towards the end of the gorge the rock walls narrow to a 3 m (10 ft.) gap, known as the Iron Gates, and rise dramatically on either side to 650 m (2.130 ft.).
